Smokey Joes

I purchased some liquid smoke for a recipe some time back and, like so many spices and seasonings, had too much left over. Not wanting to just throw it out I was looking for a way to use it up. I started to think about smoked foods and of course, barbecue and grilling came to mind. But, alas, it is still too cold to grill. Hashtag, so over winter!

Barbecue ? Sloppy Joes! Can I make Smokey Joes? Yes, I can!

In a large sauté pan brown ground beef breaking up the meat as it cooks.

Drain beef and set aside. Using the same sauté pan heat some olive oil. Add minced onion, minced green pepper, and minced garlic and sauté for 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are soft and fragrant.

Return the beef to the pan. Stir to blend. Add a can of tomato paste, water, ketchup, brown sugar, cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and some liquid smoke. Mix together.

Over low heat simmer for an hour to really blend the spices into the meat. Serve on a bun.

Dress it up a bit by adding a slice of smoked cheddar cheese allowing the cheese to melt over the beef. Add some onion rings and serve with tasty truffle & thyme parmesan tater tots. – Ella

• 2 pounds ground beef
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 onion, minced
• 1 green pepper, minced
• 3 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 (6 ounces) can tomato paste
• 1 (6 ounces) can water
• 1 (14 ounces) bottle ketchup
• 1 tablespoons brown sugar
• 1/4 teaspoon cumin
• 1 tablespoon liquid smoke
• 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
• 1 teaspoon chili powder
• 1 teaspoon kosher salt


  1. In a large pan or Dutch oven over medium-high heat brown beef. Drain beef and set aside. Heat olive oil in the pan. Add onion, green pepper, and garlic. Sauté vegetables until soft and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  2. Return beef to the pan and stir.
  3. Add the tomato paste, water, ketchup, brown sugar, cumin, liquid smoke, smoked paprika, chili powder, and kosher salt. Mix together.
  4. Simmer on low for 60 minutes. Serve in buns.
